Crazy For Quilts!

crazy-for-quilts

My entry for the Alliance for American Quilts contest is finished and was ready to send in, but I got an extension from Amy Milne in order to keep it for our first taping for Quilt Out Loud!. In each episode Mark and I open the show with a “What’s Up?” segment in which we both bring in something to show. So, I brought my quilt. I’m so pleased with how it turned out and hope it fetches a good sum in the auction!

Started My Crazy for Quilts! Entry

Monday, May 4th, 2009

The Alliance for American Quilts is having a fun contest to support their very worthy mission. In fact 100% of the proceeds of the eBay auction of the quilts will go to the Alliance. Your quilt need only be 16″ square, so why not join me in making one? The deadline in June 1, so we have plenty of time.

Crazy for Quilts! entrants are encouraged to draw inspiration from one or more aspect of the crazy quilt: design, color, fabric, surface embellishment, history or some other aspect of this style that you want to celebrate. There’s room in this contest for all kinds of crazy-from traditional approaches to art quilts.

My idea is that my head is a constant whirlwind of quilts vying to be made. “Make me!”

“No,make me first!”

This is my first rough sketch:

The next step was to draw the head to size:

Then I traced the shapes onto Steam a Seam 2, cut them out, and pressed them to fabrics, then cut along my traced lines. Now I have the beginning of my design.

As you can see, my “helper” arrived on the scene about then. It was time to take the dog for a hike and think about dinner anyway. Turned off the iPod and the light. This was such a fun hour, I can’t wait to work on it some more!

Happy National Quilting Day!

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Spring is bursting forth here in north Georgia so I am trading off working outside and quilting on this National Quilting Day. I started off the day sewing blocks together for a quilt I’m making for my brother-in-law.

The pattern is from one of my books, “Paper-Pieced Bed Quilts”, which is now out of print. The quilt in the book was in shades of blue.

As far as gardening goes, so far today I raked gardens and spread six loads of composted manure, divided nepetas and corepsis, and planted parsley.

Happiness for me  is a pile of conmposted manure! These guys agree:

Off to take Cassie for a run at the barn and see Mom’s mini horses. Have a GREAT National Quilting Day!

Spoonflower Rubber Duckie Quilt

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

spoonduckieqlting

Just back from master quilter Mavis Rosbach’s Quiltbird Studio, my rubber duckie quilt made from Andover’s Dimples  line and the fabric I had printed at Spoonflower  sure came out cute! Mavis stitched umbrellas over the half square triangles and galoshes in the border. And bubbles around the duckies–naturally!

On to binding and the quilt will be off to Iowa for our April taping for the Love of Quilting PBS show and magazine.

kitty-bed

I’m to the rim of the second rendition of a kitty bed I’ve been working on, on and off for quite awhile. The first one I made was too small when felted. Here I’ve used Cascade doubled and am making it huge so hopefully it’ll felt up just right. The kitties are waiting…

bird-placemat

One of the projects Jayne and I worked on while on our bird watching trip last week was an idea I had for placemats. This isn’t quite what I had in mind, which is the way the creative process works. We’re both very pleased. I’ll hand sew the binding on the plane (or on one of them) tomorrow.

New Sunbonnet Sue Rubber Duckie

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

workout-duckieThe fifth Sunbonnet Sue Rubber Duckie pattern in the series is up on my site. She’s a workout duckie complete with dumb bells and a water bottle. Now I need to stitch her up and take her with to Kim’s Muscle Up bootcamp which I go to twice a week. Maybe a tote bag is in order.

What I’m Working On

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

whatimworkingonHow’s this for a tease? The blocks you see in this photo are for a quilt that will be featured in Love of Quilting this fall. And the scarf I’m blocking will be in Love of Knitting. I sent off the scarf after I added some embellishments and the quilt is getting its last border on tonight so I can send it off to Mavis for quilting. Now you know what my pressing area looked like this week.

Chrstimas Bird Quilt Update

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Now that the migration of Quilters Blogs to a new server is complete, here’s a update on the bird quilt for my husband and our new house. It’s about 36″-wide by about 6 1/2 feet tall, so I have taken a top and bottom photo.

Next some leaves and another bird to add and to decide whether I want to embroider pine needles on the pine tree on the left.

Shhh… A Quilt for Christmas

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Well, at least I’m hoping to get it done by then to give to my husband.

This is to go in the entry in our new house. There’s a wall through the entry into the main hall that needs something just right. This with a small table under it and a wood bird carving will be just right.

As you can see, I decided to make it taller after I got some trees appliqued down. Having come up with where it needs to live in the house, I knew it had to be taller. Which reflects the house’s surroundings; the tall, tall trees in the big sky.

Yes, that’s Manny’s back. He gets in front of every camera!
