qol-june-28-2009-iv

I’m about to head off for our third and final day of taping the first three episodes for Quilt Out Loud. It has gone amazingly smoothly–and on time. The photo above was taken yesreday when Mark & I were preparing for our book review segment on machine quilting books.

qol-june-27-2009-iv

Here we were preparing Saturday for a segment with Debbie Kalenty, Patsy Thompson and Linda Lum DeBono.

I didn’t get any pictures with Pat Sloan or Janet-Lee Santuesanio and Mary Schilke from MQX, but others were snapping away and will share I’m sure.

Today we sew, cook, and do some designing. It’s been a tremendously fun shoot thanks to Michelle, Michael, Tom, Tony and Wally. And our hosts Tim & Sherry Cowley have been nothing short of wonderful. Yes, we are paying to have their hosue cleaned after we leave!

marianne-duckie-taping-1

Last week I taped two episodes of Love of Quilting with Liz Porter and Marianne Fons at Iowa Public Television in Des Moines.

Here Marianne and I are looking at my Dimples and Duckies quilt which we taped together. I designed the fabric and had it printed by Spoonflower. The Dimples fabrics are by Anover, designed by Gail Kessler.

Jo Morton taped an episode between mine. Here are (l to r) Cindy Hathaway who is the floor director for Love of Quilting, Jo Morton, Ande Coyle from IPTV and Liz. The Star of Bethlehem quilt on the wall was made by Cindy. You can find the pattern in the Jan/Feb issue of Love of Quilting. The fabrics were reproduced exactly from the original quilt at the Quilt Study Center in Nebraska by Andover Fabrics. It’s gorgeous! Now you know what Cindy writes so cheerily on Facebook every morning that she’s off to play with fabric and thread.

These are some of Jo’s quilts which she brought for her segment. Jo loves little blocks and has some clever ways of constructing them. Watch for her episode in the 1400 series!

Taping at Keepsake Quilting

Monday, April 13th, 2009

kqshop2

What a store!

Ivan Machiz, videographer, Jean Nolte, editor of Love of Quilting and producer of the PBS show, and I arrived at Keepsake Quilting Monday morning to tape for several purposes. I had visited Keepsake about ten years ago when they were in a smaller location. Talking about expanding–oh my! These shots don’t show show the fabric avenues and cross streets.

As we were reviewing a piece of video we taped, the store manager Deb Comeau commented that she liked how we were making the store look big. Not difficult when there is row after row after row of FABRIC!

This store is reason enough for a quilter to be tempted to move to Centre Harbor NH!

Preparing for Taping TV

gmothersdaisygarden2

This week I’ve been busy preparing for the Love of Quilting PBS show taping in two weeks. LOTS of sewing to get all the iterations of the steps done.

This is Grandmother’s Daisy Garden. The daisies are made with traditional paper piecing to avoid making set-in seams. And the leaves use curved paper piecing. I designed the block itself a few years ago and there it has stayed, pinned to my design wall, until it was time for a project for the show and magazine, “I have just the thing!”

I am so thrilled with how it came out with the Andover fabrics. And Mavis Rosbach’s quilting is–as usual–wonderful.

The episode will air in the 1400 series of Love of Quilting and the pattern will be in the Love of Quilting magazine later this year.

Now what in the world am I going to wear for the taping? ;)

On to Christmas…

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Just after Thanksgiving Ivan and his girlfriend Bing came over to shoot a short piece and have dinner. (The choclate molten cakes from the Cook’s Illustrated recipes were stars.) Here Ivan is showing Mom how the piece we shot edited. Thanks to his laptop he had it all but done before dinner. Bing is looking on.

This year my husband started decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving. He had Cassie decked out for the holdays. Funny thing is she doesn’t mind!

After dinner Cassie curled up on the couch with her head in Bing’s lap and didn’t move hardly a muscle until Bing left!

Our Home at Quilt Market

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Whew! As usual, Quilt Market was a whirlwind. Between taping and meetings and greeting shop owners and friends at the booth, I only got to see maybe 1/4 of the booths and none of the exhibits. Not complaining–just wish the time didn’t fly by so quickly!

I did manage to hand Ivan my digital camera long enough to get a few pictures of the booth while Liz (Porter–I know you didn’t need to ask!) and I were on duty. Yes, he’s good with moving and still pictures!

We were busy showing off Easy Quilts (the third issue is just out) and signing up shops for our new Sneak Peek program for quilt shops. We’re giving them a heads up as to a featured quilt project in the next issue of Easy Quilts so they’ll be ready with fabric in hand when the magazine appears in your mailbox and you head off to the shop to buy fabric. We believe in supporting local quilt shops!

You can see Ivan’s camera and light behind us in this picture. He and it are never far apart. He’s busy back in the studio editing the videos from Market so they’ll be on QNNtv shortly. Stay tuned!

Dressed and Ready to Go Taping at Quilt Market

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Ivan, our videographer,  sent me this picture from his i-Phone of him in his new shirt with the QNNtv logo on it. He’s dressed and ready for taping at Quilt Market!

Editing Assistant

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

The day after we arrived back from shooting at Williamsburg, Ivan was fast at work editing the footage. He sent me rough drafts of a few of the segments and then… nothing. Suddenly his e-mail address showed up in my inbox again. This photo was attached. The boss had come in from her morning outside and had to take up residence in his lap–she missed him!

Cleo is a black-on-black tabby and the talkingest kitty I have ever met. She was Ivan’s dad’s cat. Ivan brought him home with him when he moved home after his dad died last year. He’d been living with his dad for some time taking care of him. Ivan wasn’t much of a cat lover before, but boy, has he learned cat language.

Love of Quilting On Location in Williamsburg: The Milliner

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Our last stop was Margaret Hunter’s Millinery Shop. The second I stepped in the door I was mesmerized. I love period clothing and all of the detailed work that goes into, so being in a period shop where all of this wonderment is alive was heavenly.

IMG_2911.jpg

Janae Whitacre, the Mistress Milliner, plays–no lives–Margaret Hunter. She has researched Margaret and millinery and Williamsburg, so as to represent an accurate real-life portrait of the shop at the time.

Janea4 bl8g1.jpg

Traditionally the tailor sits cross-legged in the shop window to catch availble light. Can you imagine sitting like that all day sewing? Where’s my ergonomic chair?

IMG_2913.jpg

It is fascinating that the period clothing has much tell tell Janae, as they do Linda and Kim back at the archives. In the show you’ll hear Janae explain how what would appear to be woefully long stitches in a given piece are purposefull time savers at specific places in a garment where they are only holding things together. And since the period piece survives, obviously those stitches performed their function well!

 Jaena1 bl8g1.jpg

Here we are at the end of a long, wonderful day: Debi from Williamsburg PR, me, Janae –I’m sorry, Margaret Hunter–  is behind Ivan Machiz. Linda is beside and in front of Ivan. Jean Nolte who produces the Love of Quilting show and is the editor of Love of Quilting magazine is next, and then Pia from Williamsburg. Leslie from Windham Textiles took the picture so she isn’t in it. We should have flagged down Benedict Arnold as he went by to do be photographer instead!

This Love of Quilting show from Williamsburg will be uplinked for PBS stations June 7, so check your local listings to see when it will air where you live. As a special treat, we will be airing uncut versions of each of these episodes in August on QNNtv We hope you enjoy them!

Love of Quilting on Location in Williamsburg: The Archives

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

To start the segment, Linda Baumgarten, Curator, and I walked in as she introduced me to the archives collection. Notice the fancy high dollar rolling cart Ivan is in to get a moving shot as we walk. Jean now has a new skill to list in her resume: human video camera cart puller.
